ADE-28 Seashellgray

This is a cement-based inorganic terrazzo with a gray base, evenly embedded with natural seashell fragments measuring 1 to 3 cm. The gray base leans cool and plain, while the shell fragments carry the warm white and subtle iridescence of the ocean. The two qualities meet to create a surface that is both restrained and alive.

At 1 to 3 cm, the shell fragments are not small—each piece has a distinct presence. Crushed natural shells retain their original brittle thinness: some like small fan segments, others with curved edges, still others carrying the nacreous luster of the pearl layer. Set into the gray cement, they look from afar like coastal debris scattered across a plain floor; up close, each fragment shows its own texture and variation in thickness. The cement paste fills the gaps solidly. After grinding and polishing, the surface is a flat plane, with shell fragments and cement sitting level, smooth underfoot without snags.

As an inorganic terrazzo bound by Portland cement, the finished product is dense and hard, with higher compressive strength and wear resistance than resin-based organic terrazzo. It suits high-traffic areas such as living rooms, corridors, shopping malls, and office buildings. However, cement naturally has capillary pores. Without crystallization sealing, liquids can penetrate and leave stains. Therefore, crystallization treatment is required after installation, followed by periodic waxing to maintain surface luster and stain resistance. Daily cleaning requires only a damp mop.

The pairing of a gray base with shell fragments is neutral yet carries a hint of natural wildness. At home, it works for balconies, bathroom walls, and entryway floors, where the gray hides dirt and the subtle sheen of the shells brightens the space. In commercial settings such as ocean-themed restaurants, guesthouses, craft studios, and cultural exhibition halls, the material itself tells a story and leaves an impression. Large slabs can be cut to site dimensions, minimizing joints, and are ready for use after proper maintenance.
