MO-15 Lankagray

This terrazzo uses light gray cement as its base, the color close to a freshly troweled wall that has not fully dried, carrying a damp, plain quality. The surface holds black and white natural marble chips measuring 0.5 to 2 cm, a moderate size—large enough to see each stone’s outline clearly, yet not so big as to feel bulky.

These black and white chips are crushed directly from natural stone without tumbling, so each retains its original roughness. Some resemble shattered porcelain with sharp edges; others have had their corners worn smooth through handling and transport. The black chips read heavy, the white ones bright. Set into the light gray base, they do not contrast as starkly as white on black, nor as sharply as black on white; instead they sit in between, like coarse black-and-white sand scattered on gray paper. The 0.5 cm chips fill the gaps, while the 2 cm pieces act as small landmarks across the surface. Cement paste fills all voids solidly, and after grinding the surface is a flat plane without depressions or raised spots.

It is an inorganic terrazzo, bound by Portland cement. Once cured, the slab is noticeably heavier than resin-based boards, dense and hard, with adequate compression strength for living rooms, shopping malls, and corridors. However, cement is naturally porous. The surface must be sealed by crystallization; otherwise water and oil stains will penetrate and leave permanent marks. Periodic waxing follows, and daily cleaning requires only a damp mop.

The palette of a light gray base with black and white chips is neutral and quiet, matching various styles. At home, it works for living room and dining room floors, as well as kitchen countertops. In commercial spaces such as offices, showrooms, bookshops, and retail stores, it reads restrained yet detailed. Large slabs are cut to size, minimizing joints, and last well with proper maintenance.
